Are we changing?

Some different throughts about how technology is changing us

We are at risk of losing our imagination - an article from the Guardian by Susan Greenfield.

Print virtue and the ontology of Bo-ring, a post on Library Juice.

I'm not quite sure what I think on this yet - but it's certainly raising interesting ideas.

ICT portal

A new ICT success stories portal about how ICTs and the Internet are being used to bridge the global digital divide.

The copyright minefield

I'll admit that I don't know much about copyright matters. But this story was a surprise. Apparently, you cannot copy music for personal use. Fair enough.

But what if you own a copy of the music in a different format and want to transfer it to another - for example from a CD to your MP3 player? Against the law.

At this stage, the music companies aren't chasing this, but whose to say that they won't get around to it eventually?

Service resumed

Apologies for ignoring this blog for the past 10 days or so. Work has been busy, I went away for a few days and I've been trying to keep up to date on my other blog too. Will try to post more regularly...

Welcome!

So, I'm a librarian, or Information Officer, or Information Professional - what ever you what to call me. My role is the same - to get the relevant information to the people that need it, when they need it. Hence the title of this blog - Selective Dissemination of Information, or SDI.

I love the traditional librarian duties (cataloguing, classification etc) and I'm really excited by the new methods of dissemination (blogs, wikis, e-books etc). I'd like to use this blog to collect and think about all the new ideas in the field of information management. It's like everybody has suddenly realised how important it is, but is unable to connect it to the traditional role of librarians. This is what we do, no matter what the technology is. No matter what your job title may be, if your role is to organise, look after and help find information, you are a librarian.

Welcome!
